05 October 2026 – Arran Autumn trip – Day Three

Day Three in Arran – The day started grey and damp before getting wetter ! We were not deterred and put on our waterproof jackets and leggings and headed out ( I also put my cameras waterproof jacket on ! ) .

I started with a local walk to our cottage to see if the Otter was out early, but no sign today, there was however a pair of Grey Seals, lots of diving Gannets, Cormorants and a couple of Eider ducks.

We then set off to Corrie and Glen Sannox, where we walked up the Glen and then round and on to the Arran Coastal Way from South to North Sannox and back. The weather was torrential but the walk was still great, we spotted an 11 point Red Deer Stag with a hareem of Does, sadly they were herded together next to a Deer proof fence, and so all the photos make them look like they were in a zoo ! Photos aside it was great to watch them , and I’m sure they wont be the only Deer we see in the next two weeks.

The Redwings were hiding in the Rowan trees, and they were the first ones Ive seen this year, mixed in with plenty of Song Thrush and Chaffinch. Out on the coast there were plenty of Cormorants, the odd Grey Heron, Great and Lesser Black Backed Gulls and plenty of Curlews.

Heading away from the Sannox we stopped to watch the Seals balancing on the rocks and spotted a pair of Otters in the distance, a mother and her young. The juvenile was on a rock and Mum was bringing it food. They were a long way away, and we didn’t want to disturb so we watched and enjoyed from a distance.

Heading back to Lamlash and Kingscross we just had time to stop on the roadside and take a few quick shots of the Hares in the fields, lots of young and the odd parent keeping an eye out for them . Another great day on the Isle.
