08 November 2025- Drigg Dunes and Beach with the puppy

The day was grey at home but looked nicer out to the coast so we decided to head to Drigg dunes and beach on the West Coast of Cumbria, when we arrived the sun was shining and the birds were out.

The dunes were flooded by the river Irt and there wasn’t too many birds about, the water being too high for the usual waders. In the dunes the Meadow Pippets and Stonechats were out in force, the Starlings were flying in good numbers and the lesser black backed gulls in the distance. Once we left the dunes and landed on the beach the tide was high and so there was little bird life apart from a flock of Turnstones, which we followed along the beach for a 1.5 miles, moving each time we got too close.

These are graceful birds and wonderful to watch as the fly over the breaking waves, returning to the shore to look for food. A fantastic walk on what looked like a wet day in the fells, while we enjoyed sunshine only a few miles away.
