1 August 2024 : West Cumbria. Peregrines flying and Barn Owl Chicks fledged
1 August 2024 : A sunny evening so a quick wander tot he quarry to see how the Barn Owls and Peregrines were doing
Another sunny evening so I had a very quick trip tot he quarry to see how the Barn Owl chicks were doing, yesterday one had fledged and two remained in the nest. Today the nest looked empty, its possible that the chick were hiding right at the back, but as far as I could see from a distance it was empty, so either all three have fledged or hiding, only time will tell when I go back. The adult Barn Owl was visible in its roost, but it hadn’t flown by 8pm and that normaly means its not coming out anytime soon, so I headed along the top of the cliffs to see how the Peregrines were doing.
The Peregrines have had two chicks fledge and both remain in the quarry with mum providing some food for them, tonight however, I could only see the adult, the chicks must have been roosting as it was getting close to sunset. The adult saw me approach and even though I was on the other side of the quarry, it wasnt happy and took off for a quick flight to check me out, it came screaming, passed me by twice before realising I was a long way away and no threat and it went back to roost and ignored me !
Only a quick flight but lovely to see, and I left quickly after taking the hint it didnt want me there. It was still light so I stopped to take a few pictures as the light faded of a young Hare, one of this years Leverets I think. The forecast is not so good for tomorrow so I might not get out, so I was glad to have had a good show tonight.
