11 December 2024 : A few cold icey trips out in West Cumbria

A few times in the past few days the sun has shone, and its been bitterly cold so there were a few chances to take short trips out into the wilds of West Cumbria. The lakes were frozen over and the Teal were enjoying themselves even if food was in short supply. A lone Kigfisher was watching from afar unable to get through the ice and a Water Rail had managed to find some water not frozen by the Reeds and was hunting for food.

It was great to see the Rail, they are not common and I only managed to see one in the reeds today. The Barn Owls are still about but they have not been hunting much and so Ive only managed the Odd shot of them flying off but on the way back I mamaged to get a shot of a Kestrel sat atop an old tree in the evening light and last rays of sun. Fingers crossed the rain will stay away and we will get some more cold but clear days.
