12 August 2024 : A warm, sunny evening so a short walk to see how the Barn Owl chicks are doing
The three chicks in the Barn Owl nest are all but ready to fly the nest, so I took advantage of the good weather and checked up on them. All three are still in the nest, probably because of all the wet weather we have had. The female adults was out hunting for the chicks and bought back a steady supply of Meadow Voles and Mice, the Male seems to have lost interest in the young that wont leave and I haven’t seen him around for a week now.
The farmer has cut the meadow close to the nest for hay and so the Owls are hunting further afield now and a bit tricky to find, however they have to come back to the nest and thats where I got most of the shots tonight, however on my way home I had to stop the car and jump out as she had crossed the lake and was hunting on the road side. It didnt take her long to catch a Vole and I managed to get a few more quick photos before she was gone again. Arriving at home the Grey Heron was out hunting on the pond and a few Herring Gulls but I was late so no Swallows to watch tonight. However the forecast is for a clear night and a good chance of the Northern Lights and meteor shower so I might get out again once its dark
