Tonight the sun was out and it was hot, so I headed up at dusk to see what the Owls were doing. As soon as I arrived I saw the Male adult out hunting over the fields, a quick trip to look at the nest from afar and both chicks were sat outside of the nest looking fluffy and big , either the heat had driven them out of the nest or they have got too big to fit!
I watched the Male come back to the nest with a vole, and then when he flew off I followed him to the fields. I spent a good hour watching him hunt, catch voles and take them back to the hungry chicks, which I could hear calling all the time. Just as I was about to call it a night, while I was watching the male hunt, out of the corner of my eye I saw another Barn Owl hunting in the same field. It was the female, almost at the same time both Owls went down into the grass and emerged with one vole each, taking them straight back to the nest, I didn’t know where to point my camera !
I thought that would be a good time to call it a day as the light was going, so I headed home. It’s good to know the nest has been successful and that there are two healthy young Barn Owls almost ready to leave the nest. I will go back tomorrow and see how they are progressing.
