The day dawned wet, grey and misty, stark contrast to the sunny weather yesterday. Undeterred we headed to Seahouse and signed in with our boat trip and the National Trust to get a landing permit and off we went.
The boat tours around the small islands and Grace Darlings lighthouse before stopping at the Inner Farne isle and allowing everyone to get off. The island is owned and run by the National Trust, and is home to 90,000 nesting Puffins, and the same amount of Guillemot’s . The island is also home to nesting Artic Terns, and you have to run the gauntlet when you first get there as the nesting birds dive bomb your head as you pass close to their nest, a hat is a must as the do sometimes leave a deposit !
As you tour round the island you have to stay on the duckboard paths, as straying could damage nests, and you only get one hour on land so you need to make the most of it. The weather was raining, misty and sunny in equal measure but this didn’t detract from the trip in anyway. Being on the island is a real privilege, and every moment is to be enjoyed, even when a Tern lands on your head and doesn’t want to leave !
