16 to 22 August 2024 : Wet windy and grey
Not good weather here at all, and so trips out have been few and far between, and any photos grey and poor as a result, however I have managed to keep an eye on the Barn Owls to see how the chicks are doing. All three chicks are still in the nest, they look fully grown now but the weather seems to be keeping them in the nest. The adult Owl is out hunting as often as possible and is sticking mainly to the local meadow where the seems to be a regular supply of voles. The wet weather can stop the Barn Owls from hunting as their feathers are not waterproof and long spells of wet can lead to chicks starving so I’ve been concerned, but fingers crossed they are doing ok for now.
The Peregrines are still flying, and the chicks are still coming back from time to time. Closer to home the Hares are out and about, looking a bit damp but still appearing in pairs, and the Linnets are perching on the power lines in the fields. The Swallows are in a bit of feeding frenzy at the moment and I suspect this is them getting ready to leave shortly and they are stocking up on food for the long flight, time will tell. The storm is due to arrive tomorrow, and if we are lucky it will be an end to the bad weather and I can get out and take some nice photos. The images below are just for reference, taken from inside , or in the car or from a long way away, they wont win any prizes but hopefully give an impression !
