The sun shone and the skies were clear, so we headed out for a little wander, first on the agenda was a trip to Bassenthwaite Lake to have a look at the distant Ospreys and check out a local wood where I had heard the Pied Flycatchers were out and about.
We started our walk in the woods and for the first 15mins saw absolutely nothing ! however, once on the higher, smaller path we came apon a few nest boxes scattered in the trees and it wasn’t long before we saw a male Pied Flycatcher flitting about the trees and looking at the boxes.
We didn’t see a female anywhere but there were at least two males in and about the trees, they didn’t stay very long in one place and were hard to spot in the branches , but we sat for 20 mins and enjoyed the show.
Next was a walk down to the lake and sure enough the Ospreys were flying, they didn’t come close to the lake and stayed around the nest or far away in the air above Cat Bells. Good to see two birds out flying in the sun, and hopefully if they nest successfully we will see them at hunting over the lake more.
Not a bad walk , but we don’t get much sun so we decided to make the most of it, and headed out again in the evening to a new path close to home and next to the sea. It was a fantastic place full of Roe Deer, Rabbits, Hares and all sorts of water birds, but the jewel of the night was watching a Barn Owl hunting over the fields . It was dark before we got home, tired but happy. I will definitely be back to the new patch to watch the Barn Owls, watch this space
