As I’m still not able to walk very far after my Osprey related ankle injury ! I sat by the pond for half an hour tonight and just watched what came by
The Pied Wagtails were busy feeding their nest in a Whitethorn tree and the Grey Heron was stalking the pond, it wasn’t long before he decided he didn’t like being watched and flew off into the sunset.
Just before I called it a day, the Swallows and Sand Martins came to have a drink from the pond, I took lots of pictures but the hazy light and lack of speed on my behalf meant I didn’t get too many good shots, regardless it was great to sit and witness.
Sadly we haven’t seen the Swifts this year, looking back at my diaries they are now more than a week overdue and I fear they may not arrive this year, but I am ever hopeful. We have two Swift boxes on the side of the house which have not been used for the three years they have been up, save for a Blue Tit that moved in last year . The Swallows and Martins are also in lower numbers than last year, and they are not nesting here for the third year in a row, choosing instead somewhere down the line, and just visiting to feed and drink over the pond.
I’ll keep watching and hoping to hear the screams of the Swifts soon.
