23 July 2025 – West Cumbria Barn Owl in flight

So tonight the light was a bit flat, and the clouds gathering but I thought I would go and check on the Barn Owl nest and see how they were doing. At first there was no sign, no roosting, no action at the nest and no flying birds. Initialy I was worried that the eggs had failed and the birds gone, as it was four days since I last visited .

Just as I was worrying I spotted the male bird on the other side of the quarry, then it flew and so I moved my position to the fields were I hoped it would go to hunt, and just as I rounded the corner in he came, nearly flying in to me, he was so busy looking for prey he didn’t notice me. Over the next hour or so he made four trips back to the nest with voles, so I’m hoping the eggs have hatched, either that or the female sat on them is very hungry !

So on a night that started out worryingly, I ended up getting a near perfect shot of a close up Owl in flight !
