The sun came out again today the first walk of the day was to Longhand’s Lake a short distance away from home for an early morning dog walk in the ice dawn and with the sun still shining later on the day , I took a wander along the old railway line to see if the Red Squirrel was out and about again, Sadly this wasn’t to be, however along the way there was much to be seen.
Longlands was still in shadow when we got there, the lake was busy with Black Headed Gulls and Mallards everywhere. There were a few pairs of Little Grebes, and a few Mute Swans, but the star of the show was the pair of Golden Eye ducks that were happily diving for food.
Back at home the pond had the usual suspects, a pair of Cormorants and a Grey Heron feeding, a couple of Teal and a few Mallards. In the fields a lone Buzzard was hunting alongside the Crows and Jackdaws. The star of the walk however was the little Gold Crest, hunting for grubs in a tree next to the line, They move fast and are not easy to get a good photo, but I gave it a go and spent a happy hour watching it feed.
