08 Feb 2026 – West Cumbria, early morning ,torrential rain but a pair of Otters in a new location !

This morning it was dark, cold and chucking it down with rain, however I had to be somewhere first thing and there’s was a location I had been meaning to visit for some while, so despite the weather I risked a walk. As soon as I approached the waters edge I saw an Otters tail disappearing into the water some distance off. I took position sheltering from the rain under a tree and waited, a couple of minutes later two Otters surfaced, they made their way across the lake and into the reeds.

They were a long way off but it was great to watch them, before both left the water and headed into the reeds. I followed their route on the bank to another lake , where I found them again, this time right in front of me, in fact I had to back up so my long lens could focus. It wasn’t easy to get shots in the pouring rain, but one of the Otters came right up to the bank, lifting out of the water to get a better look at me and making a mewing sound as it did so. Satisfied that I wasn’t a threat it returned to hunting before both swam to the other side of the lake. It was too wet, dark and cold to follow them this time, so I retired to my car to dry off, but I had a big smile on my face !

I’ll be back to this location in better weather and see if I can fid somewhere to sit and watch,.
