05 April 2026 – An evening stroll in West Cumbria looking for Owls !

The sun was shining and storm Dave had passed leaving a bitter wind and passing clouds. The Owls would not have been able to feed yesterday in the storm, so there was a good chance they would be feeding tonight, and I wasn’t disapointed. Just as I arrived I saw the Owl flying low along the fence line, with a Meadow Vole held tightly in its talons. Its too early for it to be food for chicks, so he could only be taking back to to the female who will be sat on eggs in the nest.

It was a long way away, so once he was back in the nest , I drove to the other end of the fence line hoping to get another glimpse of him when he came back out, that was the plan anyway ! Once there I didn’t see him come out , but all of a sudden he was flying 10 feet away from me on the other side of a hedge. There was no way to get a shot and as soon as I was clear of the hedge he was gone. I waited for another hour but he didn’t reappear, maybe I’ll try again tomorrow if the weather plays ball.
