24 April 2026 – day 6 on the Isle of Bute – Sandwich Tern day

Today is our last full day on the Isle of Bute and set to be another very hot day, so we took it slow and I didn’t get out for an early morning walk as the tide was in, and I was having a holiday lie in !

However mid morning we headed on a short walk across the island to the other side ( about 2 miles) and to the bay of Stravanan. Along the way we spotted some Hares and Lapwings, but the heat haze was so strong that it was almost impossible to get any good useable shots, but of course I tried anyway.

Once at the bay we were lucky enough to see a pair of Sandwich Terns, now depending on where you are in the UK this will either be a common bird or a very rare one. For us it was a rarity and I was so glad to get some time watching them in the bay today. We followed the beach round to some rocky outcrops looking for Otters without any real hope as it was way to hot and bright, we didn’t find any but we did spend some time following their tracks, so we know they are there !

We had a slow walk back the same way and watched a Red Breasted Merganser, Oyster Catchers and a Redshank in the bay, before calling it a day and heading to the pub for our tea.

Tomorrow we head for the isle of Arran for a week, so fingers crossed for some more good wildlife, although our ferry isn’t until later in the day, so we will of course have one last walk out and who knows maybe see an Otter ! The Wildlife diary will begin again tomorrow on our new island home for the week
