The forecast today was for sun, having almost forgotton what that looked like, I headed out before dawn so that I could be at the River Esk for sunrise and the hope of catching the Otters. The dawn was slow to appear, as there was some early cloud about, but the birds were quick to wake regardless, the Redshanks and Curlews were vocal and flitting about in the mud of the tidal areas. Flocks of Little Egrets and Cormorants were flying along the river towards the coast and Little Egrets were fishing, there was even a Roe Deer in the woods on the opposite banks.
Just as I was thinking the Otters were not about to show, I spotted a few ripples in the water and the little ripple turned into two, a Mother and a Cub playing about in the river just as the sun started to appear.
Over the next 40 mins the two played, fished and ran along the river banks, a joy to see in the early morning and I went home with a spring in my step. Later on in the day just to top off a great day the Northern lights put on a show. A good day all in all.
