29 December 2024 : Martin Mere – Pintails, Godwits, Whoopers, Ruffs & Kingfishers

29 December 2024 : A foggy day but we managed a quick couple of hours at WWT Martin Mere on the way back from a trip on the M6. The main lake was packed with Whooper Swans, Pintails, Pochard, Greylag, Pink Footed and Canada Geese, and lots of Shelduck. On the edge of the pond it was busy with Bar-tailed Godwits and a few Ruff and even Black Tailed Godwits so it ws an exciting trip to watch them feed in the gloom.

Further along at the pond by the edge of the wetlands, the Kingfisher was zipping about feeding while a Little Egret looked on from the reeds.

A great day and so happy to see the Black Tailed Godwits and Ruffs, both by no means common and Ive never seen them at home in Cumbria.
