The weather has remained sunny and so each evening Ive been out looking for Barn Owls, and failing each time ! The pair at the old Barn are no longer showing after some building work was done to the barn, and the pair from the quarry have yet to appear.
I’ve been looking elsewhere incase they have all moved areas, but as it stands I’ve not managed to spot any, near or far, so the search will continue. While out though Ive been seeing a few interesting birds, the Buzzards have paired up and are busy mating, although the Crows which are also nesting are as busy trying to scare them away from their own nests.
The Lapwings also seem to be pairing up and it’s great to watch them flying and calling in the evenings. Back on the pond we have seen a Kingfisher fishing and a pair of Canada Geese coming to roost each night, one of which is very loudly calling every time I open my door ! The Oyster Catchers are still paired off and the Swallows , House Martins and Sand Martins are back each evening over the water, but are still in relatively small numbers compared to past years, I’m hoping these will increase soon or it will be a quiet breeding season.
The big miss is the Hares, at my usual haunt where Ive watched 6 pairs for the past 5 years there is no sign at all, not even any of the tell tale tracks in the grass, I fear that the idiots with the dogs might have got to them. I’m hoping I’m wrong, and can’t understand for the life of me why some people get enjoyment from setting dogs onto Hares in the middle of the night, they don’t even use the Hares for meat they just discard them. The world it seems is populated by a high proportion of morons.
I have found a pair of Hares elsewhere that I get to glimpse from time to time, for obvious reasons Im not saying where they are.
